life should be simple. life should be wonderful. not for this eighteen year old. she had just come back from a hell hole in montana to attend her mother's funeral and then to move back in with her dad in their wealthy looking home. life was just a mess for miss harlow rain.
she was dressed in a pair of skinny jeans, and a long sleeved tee shirt. her jacket was hanging over her right arm. she needed to get out of the house since it was filled with sadness and food. she could barely look at food anymore. anyone who knew her mother had sent something that looked wonderful but everytime she ate any of it she was get sick. at the moment food just didn't look good. maybe it was just because she felt guilty because of her mother dying while she wasn't home. but she blames them for that, she really does. they just had to ship her away when she had done nothing wrong.
harlow looks like crap, a bruise on her cheek bone and bruises covering her arms and legs. days before her mother had died and while harlow walked back to her dorm room at school she was attacked. good thing her dad made her carry around a can of pepper spray or she just might be dead. she wasn't really hurt, she just had hand marks everywhere and that bruise on her face was from being punched. she tried to cover it with makeup but it still could be seen so she just watched her face and didn't care anymore that someone might see her.
it's kind nice when no one knows your back. its been quiet and everything, just what she needed. but then again she's been living in a quiet place for almost a year and only visiting for all the major holidays. but no she's back for good and she's happy about it. there's just alot missing for her right now. she just feels completely empty.
she had gone into a couple stores and picked out some dresses and other items. her father wanted her to look presentable to his rich friends again. that means the same old boring parties and boring people. things were almost back to normal. with her bags in hand she headed to a nearby bench and sat down, placing her bags on the floor. she got a new phone the other day and still had no ones numbers in it. she needed to transfer names in and let people know she was home for good. she just wasn't up for it yet.

Jesus, he was tired. How late had he been up the night before? That was Camden for you. People got bored pretty quickly in such a small town. There were New Year’s Parties to attend. Then post New Year’s Parties. Then Post-Post-New Year’s parties. Then finally, last night’s Ah Hell It’s Really 2010 parties. Much more celebrating and he’d spend the rest of the year in bed. After all that he had to pick up some tools for some renovating around the house. Soon Theo’s place would be filled with the sounds of his father’s hammer. Just perfect. Still, it was a beautiful morning out and he tried his best to keep in high spirits.
Theo Michaels was wearing a pair of blue jeans and a plaid shirt. Very little effort had gone into his dress today. People always told him he cleaned up well but he’d been cleaning up well for the last week. Today he wanted to go without any effort in anything. Today had to be a lazy one. He picked up a bagel for breakfast and headed down the mall to the home depot. The town was small enough that the local busybodies were greeting him and asking how his parents were the entire way. Theo returned them with polite nods and excuses. A happy little grin. Sometimes Camden drove him up the wall. There was never any privacy anywhere.
Her.
When he saw her he stopped on a dime. She was sitting on a bench and fiddling around with her phone. The sight stunned him. He hadn’t seen her in forever, and she was sitting on a bench in the mall making phone calls? When did she get back? Hell, why hadn’t she called him? A rush of blood came to his cheeks and he wanted to go over to her and say something. He wanted to rant and rave until he felt better. As he watched though, he could make out the bruises on her. The one on her face made his heart ache. After all this time she still had an effect on him. Theo wrapped up his bagel and headed across the mall to her. He tossed the rest of it into the trash and then flashed her the gentlest smile he could. “Hi Harlow.”

her heart was sore from all the sadness and she just needed an escape. of course she could have gone running with her dogs, but she just needed to do a little retail therapy. it helped when her mom was around. she remembered those trips to the malls in new york. but now she sat alone. it was odd walking into the house and not having warm, wonderful smells come from the kitchen. her father had hired a cook to help serve dinner and a cleaning lady to do everything else. it was just odd since cleaning and cooking was what her mother used to do.
taking a deep breath she squeezed her eyes shut and tried to remember as much of her mother as possible since she hadn't seen her for almost a year. it was wrong for her father to want an open casket, just wrong. she couldn't go to the funeral, she couldn't bare it. maybe thats why no one knows she's back, who knows.
looking up she saw him, the person who made her heart stop beating. theo has made her so happy only a few months back before she had left this place. and now she just didn't know what to say to him. they had talked almost every day when she had gone and then only a week before now she had cut off all communication. she didn't want to cut anything off but she had been depressed and in the hospital for a few days and didn't want him knowing. and now here she was.
standing up she gave him a warm smile. ' theo. ' his named slipped through her glossed lips almost silently as she stared at him. she hadn't expected to see him at all until her bruises healed but now here she was looking like crap and there he was, same theo she remembered.
' i.. im sorry for not calling you back. ' was the only words she could muster up to say at the moment. she had lost all train of thought. maybe she should high tail it out of there but then that would look bad. no she wanted to see him, she wanted anything that had to do with him, but she wasn't going to tell him that. no she would look like a completely and utter idiot.

It felt like his heart was going to jump out of his chest and go hopping around the mall. Theo was a worry wart normally and there was no one on the planet he cared more about. When she’d stopped talking to him it’d be tough not to personalize it. Not to assume that it was about him. One of his screw ups. It wasn’t him though. He knew what was up. She loved her mother and the death had to have hit her hard. That didn’t explain the bruises though. He noted them again and sucked in a breath. The concern on his face was obvious.
“It’s all good. I just assumed you were busy. Lots to do out there...” The message was clear even if unspoken. You know, out there. Where I assumed you were? He didn’t expect her. “I do wish you had of told me you were coming back, Sweets. Things going the way they have for you I wanted to help. I mean, with your-“
With your mom. He caught himself from coming out and saying it. Theo frowned and looked down at his feet. Not the smoothest of moves. All he could think about was how hard this had to be on her. He took a deep breath “I’m just happy to see you. I mean, hey, you’re HERE. How am I going to complain about you not calling when you ended up coming home? I should be thanking you.” Another warm grin. Yeah, he admitted it worried him but he wouldn’t be telling her that now. That was Theo with her. He was a tough nut to crack. Theo could be on fire and asking Harlow if he was getting any smoke on her shirt.
“Just...can I help? I’m not going to push. I just want to help.”

all she wanted to do was act like her mother's death was a year ago. it would still hurt but atleast people would be acting strangely around her. never knowing what to say to her and what not. she knew he knew, only because it had been in the newspapers. he really wanted to help her? really. she could have only hoped for a little more time to think about all this, to think about him. she had missed him terribly. and even though they were broken up for months she still cared, she would always care.
' i'm fine. i really am. she said softly, glancing at the waxed floor. he heard his stumble of words and then stopping quickly from saying something. she knew what he was talking about, its not like she hadn't had people do that for the past four days. she knew it probably killed him that he wasn't there to comfort her or anything along those lines. she actually hadn't let anyone touch her for over a week and a half. she was tired and sore, not a good mix.
' i'm glad you're so happy to see me. ' she said with a sweet smile. her soft blue eyes finally moving up to stare at him. she knew he wanted answers on her bruises but she wasn't going to bring herself to tell him. ' i don't know what anyone can do to help anymore. ' she said quietly as she sat back down. ' i mean unless you've got brownies or something. but i don't think i could eat another thing. to much food at the house. ' she said softly. the thought made her wanna laugh but it just wouldn't leave her lips.
' ill just bring you down theo. i'm not worth it. '
